Let’s face the facts: curly hair can be a huge hassle if you don’t know how to manage it.
Anyone with a bit of wave in their hair knows that each time you get out of the shower an unwanted surprise is waiting for you, because you LITERALLY never know what your hair is going to look like. If rain is your worst hair nightmare and small creatures could get lost in your mangled tresses, these tips are for you!
After years of curly hair failures and faux paus, here are all of my best secrets of the step-by-step to frizz-free curls that last for dayzzzzz.
1. Don’t wash your hair every day...or even every other day
Curly hair doesn’t need to be washed everyday, especially shampooed. Try to rinse your curls whenever you shower, but only shampoo 2-3 times per week max. Your curls are meant to last for multiple days!
I wash my hair in the morning or when I have time to let it dry completely. Sleeping on wet curly hair equals crazy dry hair.
2. Use smaller amounts of higher quality shampoos and conditioners — your hair will thank you in the long run!
Organix is my favorite brand because they have a specific curly hair line. Their products are gentle on my scalp and smell amazing.
3. Condition longer, better, faster, stronger
After letting your conditioner sit in your hair for 5-10 minutes (use this time to shave, ponder about life or write a short novel), take a wide-tooth comb and *gently* go through your curls, starting from END to ROOT (this prevents breakage and split ends)
Only AFTER you have combed through your hair should you rinse out your conditioner.
4. Ditch the towel and grab a t-shirt
Once you’re out of the shower, resist the urge to throw your wet hair up into a twisted towel to dry, because it actually increases frizz and breakage.
Instead, take a 100% cotton T-shirt and gently squeeze your hair to remove the excess water. The cotton absorbs water just as well without being too rough on your hair.
5. Leave-in Conditioner or Oil
One way to protect the ends of your hair is to apply a small, dime-sized amount of leave-in conditioner or oil to your wet hair
This leave-in conditioner by 12-Benefits is my favorite, and Organix moroccan oil is very affordable and works well.
6. THIS IS MY BEST KEPT SECRET — Shea Butter Curly Hair Smoothie
If you do nothing else but buy this product, I SWEAR it will change your hair forever.
Apply a generous amount into the palm of your hand, flip your head over, and run the product through your hair from root to tip with your hands.
Make sure to get your most noticeable curls, such as the top layer and front pieces, especially well.
7. With your head still flipped over, rub a quarter-sized amount of gel into your hands and gently scrunch your curls
To make sure that your curls aren’t crunchy, use a soft non-hardening gel to ensure clearly formed curls that still have movement and shape.
This gel by Pantene is my absolute favorite.
8. Feel free to give your hair a little help!
Using your fingers, twist sections of your hair that have not already began to curl and make sure your hair is falling where you want it to
Go back in with a little gel to get any areas of hair that feel lacking in product
A lot of people diffuse their in very different ways, but personally, I flip my head over and spend about 4 minutes evenly diffusing the sections of my hair. To just expedite the drying process without exposing your hair to an extended amount of heat on a regular basis, diffuse for a shorter amount of time. For a more full body and bigger curls, feel free to diffuse longer!
After the curls are about 45% dry, I let them air dry with an occasional scrunch
10. Catch Those Zzz’s
At night, I put my hair up into a loose bun with a small clip. This keeps my curls from getting flattened during the night and protects the ends of my hair. In the morning, I just shake them out and refresh them in between washes with a little bit of water and product.
Sleeping on a satin pillowcase will not only make you feel like a diva princess, but also it can help reduce frizz on days you don’t wash your hair.
Finally, everyone’s hair is different, but remember that your curls make you unique and BEAUTIFUL, so never be afraid to rock what you’ve got!
